I always find intrigue and fascinating when things are made by hand

I always find intrigue and fascinating when things are made by hand. It felt the things that made by hand we're giving a life or a story of their own, with human touch.

Craft that made by hand require amount of time, life time experince , generation trade, even decade to perfect it. I always find these skill full craftsmanship men and woman are graceful, kind, dedication, passion,  gentle and in time with  dignify attitude and humility. Sometime in craftsmanship skill can be seen such rough and hard work in making, but very often in was with kind and authentic intention in their mind. Things are made with purpose are most beautiful things.

Grew up  in SE Asean, i am fortunate to be  able to see these craftsmanship firsthand. Batik making, weaving rotan basket, mengkuang mate , pottery making, blow pipes  making, jewelry craft, clay, wooden craft and many others

from different religions, custom and cultural.

Some of these craft  are getting wither , at the edge of falling into decay, some are beginning  of vanishing point. It is getting to be such rough world now days and everyday to future , that some of human being of today  aren't able to feel  or see  how things made by hand such  craft. It is a  industrialize world.

When i did my residency in Kofu , Yamanashi, Japan Sept 2018, my intention was to sketch everyday, sketch with postcard and Kokuyo notebook. Noticing, the beautiful blue indigo noren along the street of Ginza in Kofu City, i had to sketch it.

I found out  later each of these noren are actually hand made by local community. In my mind i do think it just a print, but, it's a hand made by local.Young community that help to make it vibrant and attraction towards the city.  Even more so, i was invite to participate on making one of these. I am grateful to learn and see how things are actually made. These are hand craft  of cultural that are foreign to myself, learning from its original source are indeed wonderful experince.

It may look like a deeping of  white cloth into bucket full of indigo, and hang to leave it to dry , but , someone had took their time to learn this craft  and kind  attention of better society by giving back whats good and keeping the tradition alive. What can we do with sketches our time in urban sketching?

Indigo Workshop Kofu , Yamanashi, Japan

Yuko from Saitama also part of the community,  are a good at  sewing . She sew her own blue indigo garment. Seen her work, i notice the same attitude she had towards her craft, same as any craftsmanship i've came to witness. It is with great care, kind and diligently. She only sewing to make a square garment, still it was done with great  interest .Knowing the unique of this craft, she  took time of her self to learn to sewing the simple indigo and creatively made it into dress.  I wonder ,can our sketches be creative things outside than pages of sketchbook?

As  year past on, my sketches are within pages and collecting dust, but never stop to remind me of good thing.  Why needed to sketch? Is there more to just pen, paper and colour? how does sketches change a certain life perspective?

Seeing the poster for the event, using my sketches, i am very honor and overwhelmed. It is just a sketches in notebook, it does look rough, but it tell a story, mostly because it is not just my story but others as well. I merely sketch it.

There came a time, after sometime, sketches can be more than just a hobby ,  a things to do in past time, an exercise or something to showcase.

There are more to just having sketches in presenting within  hash tag, representing location, colourful pages, perfect perspective, sharp point of view, eloborate stroke, etc. What better way of sharing our made by hand by contribute back to better society. We can do it with sketches.  I still learning to sketch , always,  and hope i able to do it the same way as craftsmanship i have meet, with dedication, passionate, kind , graceful, honest, humility  and  authentic.

The event are  charity auction for AIRY.
AIRY is an important place where people gather and has been giving light of hope to Kofu city through art. This year, there is no artist because of coronavirus, Hohosha and previous AIRY artists decided to support AIRY, for its financial situation.
